Clinton, Mississippi(September 2, 2008) – The Mississippi High School Activities Association announced today that some of its member schools’ athletic fields have been damaged and are holding water as the rain from Hurricane Gustav continues to inundate Mississippi.
Ennis Proctor, MHSAA Executive Director, stated, “We were fortunate that the damage from this hurricane was not greater. However, weather sources are telling us that another hurricane and more heavy rain are likely in our state. We will leave the decision to the individual school as to whether they play this Friday night.”
He added that some of the schools may delay Friday night play to Saturday or Monday night.Very few of the involved schools will have division games. However, division games must be played even if on a delayed schedule.Division games at this point in the season are mostly in the 1A schools, and there are very few 1A schools along the southern part of the state.
Proctor said, “We are thankful our schools did not sustain any more damage than they did from this hurricane, and we are committed to supporting those schools that did so that they can continue their games on a delayed basis, if necessary. However, we must arrange schedules so that there is no backup of games that would impact our state playoffs and championships.”
